Local Editorial Analysis

I chose to analyze an article by the Kearney Hub about the YRTC issues.

This editorial was centered around Senator John Lowe trying to push a bill for stricter punishment for assaulting YRTC staff, and funding to build a wall around the premises to contain escapees. It talks about how hard it is to sell Nebraskan lawmakers on correction-based issues. The problem is focused in Kearney where there are many escapees.

I agree with John Lowe trying to push this bill through. Growing up in Kearney my parents would constantly get calls of YRTC escapees, so much in fact that it wouldn’t even be a surprise. It almost became a routine thing. I believe that attacking an officer should have been a felony from the beginning. If you’re there for something you did then attacking an officer should have a harsh consequence. As for the fence he wants to construct, I agree wholeheartedly that there needs to be one. The YRTC is placed right across the street from Kearney homes, and with so many escapees these people that live so close cannot feel safe, let alone the rest of Kearney. I wish Senator John Lowe the best of luck with getting this through to make Kearney a little bit safer.
